Welcome to Ifrane

Ifrane sits at around 1,665 metres in the Middle Atlas mountains, in the Fès–Meknès region of Morocco. With its pitched red roofs, cedar forests and mountain air, it is widely known as the "Little Switzerland of Morocco" — a very different Morocco from the one most visitors picture.

It is one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country, quiet and walkable, and a well-established academic destination. The calm setting and cool climate make it a focused environment for a scientific conference.

Good to know: Ifrane holds the record for the lowest temperature ever recorded in Africa (−23.9 °C, in 1935). Late November here is cold — please pack accordingly.

Travel

Getting There

Ifrane has no airport or train station of its own — you arrive via Fès, Meknès or Casablanca, then continue by road.

By Air

  • Fès–Saïss (FEZ)

    Nearest airport — approx. 65 km, about 1 hour by road. Best option if you can find a connection.

  • Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN)

    Morocco's main international hub — approx. 4–5 hours by road, or train to Fès then road.

  • Rabat–Salé (RBA)

    An alternative entry point — approx. 3.5–4 hours by road.

By Train

  • To Fès or Meknès

    National rail (ONCF) connects Casablanca, Rabat and Tangier to Fès and Meknès.

  • Then by road

    From Fès (~65 km) or Meknès (~60 km), continue to Ifrane by bus, grand taxi or private transfer — roughly 1 hour.

  • Note: there is no railway station in Ifrane itself.

By Road

  • Intercity coaches

    CTM and Supratours operate comfortable long-distance services to Ifrane from major cities.

  • Grand taxis

    Shared or private taxis run frequently from Fès, Meknès and nearby Azrou (~17 km).

  • Driving

    Roads are good. In late November, mountain routes can be affected by rain, fog or early snow — allow extra time.

Ifrane in late November is a mountain climate — noticeably colder than coastal or southern Morocco.

The single most important item. Evenings are genuinely cold.

For sessions, the opening ceremony and networking.

Accommodation

Where to Stay

Ifrane is a small town — rooms are limited during events, so early booking is strongly advised.

In Ifrane

Hotels, guesthouses and mountain chalets in and around the town centre, most within a short drive of the venue. The most convenient choice — and the first to sell out.

Azrou ~17 km

A nearby cedar-forest town with additional guesthouses and smaller hotels — a practical fallback about 20–25 minutes away by road.

Fès ~65 km

The widest range of hotels and riads, and worth combining with a visit to the historic medina — but it means about an hour of travel each way.

The town's best-known landmark — a stone lion sculpture and the classic Ifrane photo stop, right in the centre.

Cedar Forests & Macaques

The ancient cedar forest near Azrou is home to wild Barbary macaques — one of the region's signature experiences.

Michlifen

A mountain area just outside town, known as one of Morocco's rare ski destinations and a scenic drive year-round.

Ifrane National Park

Lakes, cedar woodland and walking trails surrounding the town — an easy escape between sessions.

Fès Medina ~65 km

One of the world's largest car-free urban areas and a UNESCO World Heritage site — a natural add-on to your trip.

Meknès & Volubilis

The imperial city of Meknès and the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis, both UNESCO listed, make an excellent day trip.

Visa & Practical Info

Visa & Entry

Nationals of many countries may enter Morocco without a visa for short stays, while others must apply in advance. Entry requirements depend on your nationality and can change.

Please check the current rules with the Moroccan embassy or consulate in your country well before booking, and make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay.

Invitation Letter

Registered participants who need an official invitation letter for a visa application or for institutional funding can request one from the organizing committee.

Please request it as early as possible, including your full name as it appears in your passport, your affiliation and your paper ID if applicable.
